Reading homework!
1. Describe interaction and stability in 3-D form. What is the “three plane rule?” Give an example?
The three plane rule states stability occurs when any three planes meet equally.
2. What is an environmental plane and planar structure? Give examples and describe it.
an environmental plane is the plane that the structure is attached to. and any surface with a planar structure attached to it is called the ground plane
3. Define an architectonic form. List three examples given in the reading: (A). (B). (C.)
A. the regular geomentric shapes featuring a preponderance of rectangles, triangles and simple curves and circles. - like most architectural forms such as buildings, automobiles, or even furniture.
b. primary emphasis, for structural reasons, on horizontal and verticle orientation relative to gravity and a usually orthogonal (90) placement of elements. building structures, decks ect.
c. the strong contest of closed and open space with emphasis on the transitions between there two types of space.
4. How cans a reflective surface effect the transition of space?
reflective surfaces allow the illusion of space and volume in other wise small spaces and also give the feel of a very light ethereal open environment. used a lot in modern architecture especially in commercial buildings and lobbys.
5. How can planes define volume?
the main use of a plane is to activate space, planes can define volume by their shape and placement
6. Describe the following organizational principles that relate to 3 dimensional forms: (Give your own visual examples)
- Organization- the organization of parts in a piece determine what the viewer gets from the piece and whether the message is successfully executed. if every things thrown everywhere theres a feeling of confusion. if every things all lined up equally theres a calmness about the piece.
- Synergy- for example using paper stacked on top of paper on top of paper start to create a more interesting voluminous object as opposed to the almost two dimensional pieces of paper used to make it.
- Order and freedom- allowing order into your piece while trying to control it is extremely hard. and having the freedom to completely disregard all order or embrace it completely.
- Structure and unity- structure and unity go hand in hand when it comes to 3D design. structure is more of the physical manifestation of unity which is more of a feeling about the overall project.
- Symmetry- symmetry can often times be a bit expected and lead a piece to be boring but sometimes its executed beautifully and give a piece calmness to it
- Repetition within variety- refers to a pattern
- Rhythm and gradation- allowing objects and systems to have sort of a movement on their own allow for the piece to loose stagnant qualities that may hold it back!
